There will be no roaming charges in Europe from June 15th
After many negotiations, the European Commission has reached their aim - mobile users will see no roaming charges in Europe and several other destinations from the 15th June. DataKom customers will be able to enjoy making calls, sending texts and using the internet at no extra cost.
Why is it happening?
“Bill shock” affects over 9 million UK mobile phone users a year whilst travelling abroad according to research from uSwitch – some seeing bills costing more than the price of a holiday. Typical rates have cost 16p a minute to make calls and additional charges on top for receiving calls, sending texts and downloads.
But the European Commission has been fighting to put an end to this, and in 2013 proposed a single market for electronic communications within the EU and to eliminate the charges.
What about phone updates and using the internet?
If your contract includes 2GB of data a month then this applies in any EU country at no additional cost. If you need to purchase more data you’ll pay the same as being at home – same applies for bundles or a pay as you go customer.
Will I still have to pay to receive calls?
No – mobile users have previously been charged to receive calls but this will cease on June 15th.
Will I still need a European sim?
No– unless you have a much cheaper deal there is no need to keep switching to a separate sim.
What countries are included?
All countries in the EU - Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Jersey, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden.
What about non-EU countries?
The majority of network operators including Vodafone and O2 (who we partner with) have already chosen to include popular non-EU countries. From the 11th June Vodafone is dropping its roaming charges in 40 countries in its EuroTraveller zone, including Iceland, Turkey and Switzerland. O2’s roaming-free Europe Zone will cover 47 countries for pay-monthly customers.
What does this all mean for me?
Those on a mobile contract in an EU country will be able to use their current call, text and data allowance as they would in the UK while pay as you go customers will continue to pay the same rate. DataKom:Mobile is our own virtual network which means you have one provider - but access to two different networks offering the best tariffs pricing and coverage. With no roaming charges in Europe your tariff will be the same in any EU country at no extra cost.
