How to Choose a Business Telephone System Partner
There are a lot of telecom companies out there, providing services like phone lines, business telephone systems, business mobiles and broadband. So when it comes to choosing one, who should you choose?
It can be a difficult market to navigate. Whether you’re new to telecoms or a returning customer, you can always benefit from some advice. Here are our top tips on what to look out for in a great telephone system provider.
Consider what support is included
Often companies go to 3 different suppliers to get quotes, and then go with the cheapest. It makes sense – why spend more than you need to?
One of the issues is that some suppliers will slash prices, and then not offer the same level of support once you sign up – to maintain margins. At DataKom we have a significant engineering team ready to support our customers, and that makes us different to a lot of telecom companies. Some companies only have 1-5 employees, and don’t have the resources to look after existing customers. They just chase new ones, to replace the ones who leave.
Support is a difficult one to quantify, so using a company with track-record and resources (but one that is small enough to care) is important.
Check if they are the direct supplier
There are two main types of telecom companies out there – resellers and direct sellers. So some companies make a commission on sales, and any problems you have to deal with the network they sold on behalf of.
Meanwhile, other companies like DataKom deal with the networks directly on your behalf. This means you can get on with running your business, while your supplier keeps your lines running smoothly.
Don’t assume bigger is better
Given that one-man-bands and smaller companies present such a risk, it would be sensible to go with a large supplier, right?
Not necessarily. At the other end of the scale, large corporations can be very bureaucratic, and it can take them a while to respond to support queries. We pick up a lot of business from customers who are struggling to get support from the large corporations, and switch to us for the more proactive and local support.
So while the large companies have great resources – beware that if anything goes wrong, you could be waiting days for a solution.
Ask for testimonials
When you’re picking a supplier it’s a good idea to do your due diligence.
That means asking your potential supplier to see examples of clients they’ve done work for. You could even ask to speak to past customers – if they have a good reputation they won’t mind putting you in touch.
Go pay them a visit
It may seem like a surprising suggestion – but going to visit your potential supplier is a great way to get to the core of what a business is really like. A lot of companies use stock images online, or make themselves seem different to what they are. Why not go see them and find out for yourself?
